Aloha Supporters,
The Kumu Hula Association (KHA) of Northern California would like to thank you for supporting the May Day Festival and Concert and helping to fulfill our founder, Ehulani Lum’s dream of perpetuating the Hawaiian culture for Hawaiians and Hawaiians-at-heart. The May Day Festival and Concert is our largest annual event, and we look forward to celebrating our culture every year through this event.
However, after months of preparing for the May Day festival, we find ourselves amid a national emergency and Coronavirus pandemic. The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention has warned the nation to avoid large gatherings of more than 50 people and curtailing non-essential travel during this period. In addition, the Alameda County Health Department and Fairgrounds will close events and gatherings with more than 250 attendees in Alameda County.
After much thought, discussion, and exploration of various options to ensure the health and safety to all those involved, it is with heavy hearts full of sadness but also a deep sense of responsibility and care that the KHA Board has decided to cancel the 2020 May Day Festival and Concert. We apologize for any inconvenience that this decision has caused you. We are grateful for the generous contributions of time, energy, and resources that have been provided by all of our supporters of this event. We would like to thank each and every individual who has contributed time and talent toward this annual Mother’s Day event.
Mahalo for your aloha of Hawaiian and island culture and continued support, as we navigate through these uncertain times.
Aloha a hui hou,
Deanie Lum-Villiados
President
